Nintendo has surprised fans with a new update for Super Mario 3D World, introducing fresh content and enhancements to the beloved platformer. This unexpected addition reignites the adventure, bringing exciting new features to both solo players and multiplayer experiences.

New Update for Super Mario 3D World

Nintendo just dropped a surprise update for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and it’s fantastic to see them still supporting a title that’s been around for a while! The latest patch, 1.2.2, rolled out on September 30, and while it’s pretty small, it promises to enhance the overall gameplay experience by fixing “several issues”. Players can expect a smoother adventure as they jump and power-up through the game.

Super Mario 3D World updated for Switch 2

Originally, Super Mario 3D World came out on the Wii U way back in 2013, but the 2021 Switch version, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, brought new life to this classic. It pairs the beloved platformer with the wildly popular Bowser’s Fury, allowing players to dive into a chaotic open-world adventure that mixes classic Mario fun with innovative gameplay elements. The reception has been stellar, with over 13 million units sold and an impressive average critic score of 89 on OpenCritic.

This update isn’t the first surprise we’ve seen for this title this year. Earlier, Nintendo announced a free Switch 2 update that upgraded the visuals and performance, introduced HDR support for Bowser’s Fury, and enabled GameShare for multiplayer action. Plus, you can now enjoy GameChat features, making it easier than ever to team up with friends and challenge those pesky Bowser battles together!

Getting back to the latest bug fixes, this update follows the 1.2.1 patch from July, which addressed a specific issue encountered by players on the Switch 2. Nintendo has always been great at iterating on its games, ensuring they remain enjoyable long after their initial release.

With retro vibes in the air, the update leads right into the release of Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 on October 2, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the franchise. Not to mention, the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie hitting theaters on April 3, 2026, ensuring Mario remains a staple in both gaming and cinema. Given all this excitement, there’s never been a better time to be a fan of our favorite plumber!
