Hey everyone! If you’re diving into Borderlands 4, you might find the UI a little messy, but the real challenge lies in the Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM). This mode cranks up the difficulty like crazy, and it’s here to keep you on your toes even after finishing the campaign.

After you roll credits on the main story, you automatically unlock UVHM 1, which kicks off a series of intro missions. These missions teach you the basics about Firmware and familiarize you with the game world. Once you wrap those up, it’s time to tackle the real fun!

Unlocking Ultimate Vault Hunter Ranks

There are currently five ranks to conquer in UVHM, with a sixth rank expected by the end of the year. To move up from one tier to the next, you’ll need to complete specific challenges and defeat Wildcard Missions assigned by Lilith. Check your progress in the Missions menu — it’s not the most intuitive, but you’ll get the hang of it!

As you grind through UVHM, don’t forget to beef up your character builds, farm for better gear, and work on your specializations. Trust me, you’ll need all the extra firepower you can muster.

Ultimate Vault Hunter 1

To unlock UVHM 1, just finish the main quest and tackle these tutorial missions:

  • Zane’s Firmware
  • Maurice’s Bounty
  • Big Encore
  • Wildcard Missions

Once UVHM is activated, you can tweak your difficulty level in the session settings whenever you want, so don’t hesitate to adjust your level!

Ultimate Vault Hunter 2

Now here’s where it gets gritty. To reach UVHM 2, you must wreck these bosses:

  • Song’s Over: Kill Bramblesong in Stoneblood Forest.
  • Bio Break: Take down Bio-Bulkhead in Fadefields.
  • Omega 86’d: Defeat the Bio Armored Thresher in the “One Gassy Issue” side mission.
  • No Points Awarded: You’ll find Sydney Pointylegs at the Ripper drill site in Hungering Plain.

After you take them down, chat with Lilith to kick off the Rush The Gate Wildcard Mission and qualify for UVHM 2.

Ultimate Vault Hunter 3

Here, you’ll face even tougher foes to advance:

  • Now Who’s Gonna Watch This Core: Defeat Core Observer in Fadefields.
  • Pelted: Kill Shadowpelt in Cuspid Climb.
  • So I Felt Like: Crush Rocken Roller in Carcadia Burn.
  • Blasted Furnace: Take out Frank the Furnace in Fadefields.

Beat these guys and return to Lilith for the His Vile Sanctum Wildcard Mission to move on to UVHM 3.

Ultimate Vault Hunter 4

Up next, time to face even more intense challenges:

  • Draggin’ Wagon: Combat Battle Wagon in Stoneblood Forest.
  • Fake It Till You Make It: Defeat Mimicron in Fadefields.
  • Who Named This Guy: Take down The Immortal Boneface in Cuspid Climb.
  • Bloom Boom: Get rid of Skull Orchid in Carcadia Burn.

Finish these and go back to Lilith for the Her Flaming Vision mission to unlock UVHM 4.

Ultimate Vault Hunter 5

To finally reach UVHM 5, task yourself with these boss fights, which are much harder versions of previous challenges:

  • The Inception: Complete the Primordial Vault in Fadefields.
  • The Origin: Complete the Primordial Vault in Terminus Range.
  • The Base: Complete the Primordial Vault in Carcadia Burn.

Once you ace those and return to Lilith, you’ll take on the The Timekeeper’s Order Wildcard Mission to fully unlock UVHM 5!
